The European Union strategy against climate change

Abstract

The characteristics of climate change require a coordinated action at the global level to achieve an effective mitigation. The article presents the trajectory of the European Union’s contribution to the problem, as well as its efforts to reduce its emissions, in the international context. The decreasing relative importance of the European Union in global emissions makes evident the need to coordinate its policies at the international level. The objectives and strategy of climate policy of the European Union are presented. These are updated with the “Fit for 55” package, which represents a leap of ambition in the objectives and measures, as well as a positive advance in various aspects of climate policy. Finally, the article emphasizes the need to advance in carbon pricing policies - both for its advantages as an instrument and for its greater facility to coordinate more ambitious policies at the international level - and presents some proposals.
