Abstract

The institutionalisation of equality policy in science, both at the national and the European scale, should facilitate progress towards equality in a space that wants to consider itself merit (and ability) driven. But discriminatory practices, both conscious and unconscious, direct or indirect, leave women out of many of the positions that they should occupy according to their accomplishments and capabilities. Many scientific institutions and their professionals still do not understand that if gender equality is only formally achieved and actual compliance is not monitored, they will lose part of the talent they are trying to cultivate.

Author Biographies

Ana Sánchez, University of Valencia (Spain).

Retired professor of Philosophy from the University of Valencia (Spain). She researches complexity, science, and feminism. She has published several articles on the intersection of her research, has conducted several research projects, and lectured on Radical Epistemologies in Feminism and Science for 25 years.

Teresa Samper-Gras, University of Valencia (Spain).

Adjunct professor of Sociology at the University of Valencia (Spain). Her teaching focuses on methodology and quantitative social research techniques. Her research interests include the relationship between gender and science and the inclusion of gender perspectives in research. Her professional career developed in the field of public health, research management, and scientific communication.

Marcela Jabbaz, University of Valencia (Spain).

Tenure-track 1 professor at the University of Valencia (Spain). She has performed research for the National Scientific and Technical Research Council of Argentina and was the director of the Centre for Organisational Studies at the University of Buenos Aires (Argentina). Her current research focuses on gender and science, the methodology of social science, organisation sociology, and public policy.

Capitolina Díaz, University of Valencia (Spain).

Full professor of Sociology at the University of Valencia (Spain) and former president of the Association of Women Researchers and Technologists (AMIT). She researches different fields, especially in gender and science, gender and employment, and gender and social science and has published several books and papers on these topics. She has also held positions of political responsibility, was the director of the Women and Science Unit (Spanish Ministry of Education and Science), and was the general director for Equality in Employment (Spanish Ministry of Equality).
