Abstract

In this paper we propose to make a comparative analysis of the functions that witches assume in the Valencian popular narrative. This is in order to infer the motives and values that may betray certain ideological and cultural appreciations and prejudices linked to gender. It is therefore a question of assessing the extent to which the historical reality of women accused of witchcraft has affected a certain grammar of fantasy that justifies the characterization of these female characters and the rituals they perform in popular fiction, in accordance with a strategy that pursues the study and analysis of the Valencian ethnopoetic heritage from a gender perspective.
