Abstract

The twelfth edition of the Diccionario de la lengua castellana of the Real Academia Española (DRAE 1884) is a very significant edition in the history of Spanish lexicograpy. Aside from the metalexicographical changes, it increases the nomenclature of the dictionary with respect to previous editions by including a small group of words representative of the Spanish language and the life of the Philippine Islands. In this study, an analysis of these words and their lexicographical treatment is carried out in order to find out the linguistic and historical circumstances in which their acceptance in the normative dictionary of Spanish took place.
