Historical memory and forgetting in the teaching of history: the case of Japan and Italy

In this paper, we review some researches and relevant publications where aspectsrelated to the inclusion of memory in the teaching of history (in the cases of Italy and, further,Japan) and the connection between politics and memory management are analyzed. Regardingthis last issue, it is evidenced the importance of policy regarding the selection and forgettingin the institutional memory and how the commemorative rituals or the construction of anofficial history involves positioning regarding the memory. Finally, political positions thatdetermine the selection of the memory in the official history which, at the same time, is taughtin schools, are observed.Downloads
