This essay explores the violence inherent in the model of academic masculinity through its representation in the form of professorial busts, through the perspectives of gender and of critiques of individuating figures of knowledge. It then comments on Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz’s analysis of the men of letters of her time (seventeenth century), with the hypothesis that her position as a subaltern and extra-ordinary woman allows her to identify with particular lucidity the risks involved in the «privilege» of being recognized by her male «peers». Finally, an attempt will be made to interrogate the interest in the violence between men in the work of Ricardo Piglia, an author who stands out among others for having foreseen the risk of his own «becoming bust», through the posthumous publication of Los diarios de Emilio Renzi (2016).
