This article presents an analysis of a recent science-fiction graphic novel, The Surrogates. The question we want to tackle is that of the importance of genre labels and expectations, which are clearly conflicting in this case, for science-fiction and graphic novel do not belong to the same (intended) cultural sphere. We shall try to demonstrate that in the case of The Surrogates the wilful confusion of genre characteristics and expectations plays a strategic role in the construction of the work.
