Guidelines for authors/as
GENERAL AND ORTHOGRAPHIC RULES FOR AUTHORS
Texts should be carefully adjusted to the following length and style requirements as a preadmission step and subsequent peer review process.
Term: the submission of articles will be made through the platform of the journal before Apri. 15 so that its publication can be considered in the issue corresponding to the current year.
Submission: The originals will be uploaded online through the Open Journal Systems platform of the University of Valencia: <https://ojs.uv.es/index.php/IMAGO/index>. The author must previously register on this platform. In this submission shall be entered: a) text file from the template and b) compressed folder (zip) with all image files (vid. infra: illustrations).
Frequency: authors may not publish articles for two consecutive years.
The language of the journal is Spanish, but studies in any of the official languages will be admitted in the autonomous communities of the state, as well as in another widely used European language.
Digitized text, from the IMAGO TEMPLATE, without omitting or changing any of its statements in the established order, with particular care to specify:
- a) Title in the original language and in English, in this order.
- b) Name of the author, institutional affiliation and ORCID.
- c) Abstract and keywords (first in English and then in Spanish), separated by semicolon (;) and in this order (first in English and then in the original language).
- d) Illustrations references in the corresponding place of the text: [fig. 1], [fig. 2], etc.
- e) Check the correct working of every DOI or web link. Every web address should always be an «https», never an «http».
Maximum Extension: 35,000 characters for all the full text, including spaces, abstracts, keywords, bibliography and notes.
Illustrations: Illustrations should be embedded within the text in low resolution to facilitate peer review. However, they will be delivered separately in high resolution (jpg or tiff format) gathered in a compressed folder (zip), each with its unequivocal numbering: 01, 02, etc. They should not be loaded into the system as separate files. If the compressed folder of images is larger than that accepted by the system, they can be sent directly to the journal’s secretariat through another medium. For example, We Transfer: <https://wetransfer.com>.
Maximum number of illustrations: 1 every 4000 characters of the entire text. These may be images, text boxes and tables. Exceptions to this rule must be justified and approved by the journal’s Direction.
Texts of the captions: they should be brief. The list will be available at the end of the document after the bibliography:
Fig. 1. Sebastián de Covarrubias, Emblemas Morales, cent. I, emb. 67.
Fig. 2. Diego Velázquez, Las Meninas. Madrid, Museo del Prado.
On italics: its use should be very restrictive, being used especially for quotations in a language other than the one used in the text, and for when it is wanted to highlight some word or expression, as titles of artistic works. Linked punctuation marks should also be typed in italics:
La obra presenta rasgos de bildungsroman: el desarrollo físico del personaje, etc.
On bold letters: limited to design decisions. Authors should not use bold letters in the writing of the manuscript, except for titles.
The names of the emblems, citations of epigrams, distiches and other texts (filacteria, etc.) must always be enclosed in quotation marks, and also in italics if they are in a language other than that used in the body of the text:
«Nulla sors longa»
«No es tan fácil la salida»
All literal quotations will be quoted within the paragraph, and in italics only if it is a different language. When they exceed three lines, an exclusive paragraph shall be composed outside the body of text, without quotation marks, in italics only if it is a different language, indented and with a size of 10,5 points.
All citations in Greek must be written exclusively in unicode characters.
The suspension points indicating the text elision in quotations are bracketed:
«[...] descubrir la realidad»
The quotation marks to be used are always the angular ones o guillemets: «aaaaaaaaa aaaaaaa». When there are quotation marks inside quotes, the simple one should always be used, both to open and to close: «aaaaaaaaa 'bbbbbb' aaaa». In Microsoft Word, guillemets can be obtained from the menu: insert/symbol. The punctuation mark that usually accompanies the closing of quotation marks should be put after these and not before:
«descubrir la realidad».
Footnote references within the text shall be superscripted behind the corresponding word and behind the punctuation mark which may be associated with that word:
Hoy hace sol.1
Hoy hace sol,1 pero mañana lloverá.
Illustrations or figures references within the text should be bracketed and abbreviated in lower case letter:
[fig. 1].
The dash must be typed as two short hyphens (--). In the layout process, they will be replaced by the corresponding dash.
Footnotes should be avoided for simple bibliographic references, which should appear abbreviated in the text. For this purpose, the author-date system shall be used: the surname of the author, the year in which the reference was published and, where appropriate -after colons-, the pages of interest:
La nevada invernal (Cohen, 1937: 208-211)
Aby Warburg (1927) llegó a decir […]
In Biblical references, the international abbreviations appearing in the Jerusalem Bible should be used, leaving no space between the numbers of chapters and verses:
(Jn 3,2-5)
For references by classical, Latin and Greek authors, the abbreviation criteria of the Thesaurus Linguae Latinae and the CSIC Greek-Spanish Dictionary (or Liddell-Scott’s Greek English Lexicon) should be followed, respectively. The reference to the corresponding critical edition, such as, for example, Migne’s Patrology, will appear below separated by a semicolon:
(avg., Doctr. Christ. 1, 32; PL 34, 32)
(Iren.Lugd., Haer. II, 32, 2; PG 7, 835).
The reference to an electronic document should be in a footnote between the signs < and >, and then the date of consultation:
<https://tipos.blogs.uv.es> 1/5/22.
It is required to indicate the doi code of those electronic scientific publications that possess it. It must be indicated below the bibliographical data, in the form of a URL, which is the reference, and it is not necessary to indicate the date of consultation:
<https://doi.org/10.7203/imago.13.23660>
To know if an electronic publication is assigned a DOI, there is the following electronic resource: <http://www.crossref.org/guestquery/>
The final bibliographical list should be limited to the works cited in the text. Authors will be referenced by surnames followed by the initial of the first name (never the full name). The year of publication will be bracketed after the name, adding a letter in italics (a, b, etc.) when different publications of an author coincide in the same year. The titles of books and magazines are in italics. Book chapters, journal articles or dictionary entries, in round and between quotation marks. The score will follow the standard observed in the following examples:
- a) Books.
Ferrá Paz, D. [1997]. Estudios sobre Paolo Giovio, Turín, Einaudi.
- b) Books chapters.
Sáez Guillén, J.F. [2004]. «Los manuscritos en catalán de la Biblioteca Colombina», en M.I. Paiz Hernández (ed.), La memoria de los libros. Estudios sobre la historia del escrito y de la lectura en Europa y América, Salamanca, Instituto de Historia del Libro y de la Lectura, vol. II, 245-263.
- c) Journals articles.

- d) Newspapers articles.
Mateu, J. [2000]. «La autocrítica de la razón», El Periódico, 30-03-2010, 2.
