Abstract

This research has analyzed the first performance at the Teatro Principal of Valencia of the great Spanish tenor Julian Gayarre, using as source the Valencian press during the monarchy of Alfonso XII. The singer, born in Roncal (Navarra), performed at the Teatro Principal during the 1880-1881 season. In April 1881 he sang La Favorita, La Africana, Lucia di Lammermoor. This research also collects and studies music reviews published in local newspapers “El Mercantil Valenciano” and “Las Provincias”.
