Faut-il croire à Geoffroy de Monmouth ? Notes sur la réception de l’ "Historia regum Britannie" au xvie siècle (1508-1579)

Le xvie siècle a-t-il cru au roi Arthur ? Il est possible de répondre à cette question en abordant la réception du texte qui est au fondement de la légende arthurienne, l’Historia regum Britannie de Geoffroy de Monmouth, ouvrage pseudo-historique tenu pourtant en haute estime pendant le Moyen Âge. Nous étudions la transmission textuelle de cette œuvre, ses adaptations, ainsi que les emplois qui en ont été faits. Est esquissé ainsi un panorama qui révèle d’abord les épisodes de continuité dans la fortune de l’ouvrage et ensuite les critiques, en particulier humanistes, qui ont œuvré en France et en Europe pour contester la tradition de pseudo-historicité du texte. Tout en touchant des figures d’humanistes italiens, l’analyse se focalise sur le contexte français, en particulier entre l’an 1508, editio princeps de l’Historia regum Britannie, et 1579, parution des Annales de France par François de Belleforest.

Abstract
Did the 16th century believe in king Arthur’s existence? This question can be answered through an analysis of the reception of the Historia regum Britannie of Geoffrey of Monmouth, the text which laid the basis of the Arthurian legend and which, despite its pseudo-historical content, was held in high regard during the whole Middle Ages. In this paper, we aim to study the transmission of this work, its adaptations and the different ways it was received in the 16th century. We provide an historical panorama which shows both the continuity of the Historia’s readings in the Renaissance and the critical attacks, by humanists in particular, which tried to break the belief in this pseudo-historical book. While addressing two important figures of Italian humanists, the analysis focuses on the French context, between 1508, editio princeps of Geoffroy of Monmouth, and 1579, publication of François de Belleforest’s Annales de France.
