Abstract

The distribution of irrigation water, attached to irrigated cropland in Orihuela, has a history dating back to Muslim culture, but not until the seventeenth century was it regulated in proportion to the surface. In previous centuries the distribution of water was in charge of ?cequieros? or trustees. When in the sixteenth century the population increased and with it the occupation of space, the need for water was a must, therefore was necessary to regulate the use and control of irrigation: batches appear. The evolution will not be easy, because during these two centuries XVI and XVII, free irrigation without regularization coexists with controlled watering. This article shows how the origin of irrigation rounds, as we know it today, comes from these centuries, and the most important architect who was Jerome Mingot.
