In the past, practice was considered as a sufficient means to achieve mastery of piano performance. Usually little or no attention was paid to theory, supported at best by spontaneous theories, grounded in common sense. In the face of each technical problem, the test-error procedure was used, adopting without exception, and almost always unconsciously, the solutions that worked. What ultimately interested the pianist was to know how to proceed with the most effective and not the deep understanding of the processes involved in their performance.
