Jazz, Improvisation.Abstract
This article clarifies misconceptions that have spread on the definition and contribution of jazz to the history of music. At the same time, it approaches a synthesis of the most innovative musical aspects that emerged from the cultural fusion of the European and African musical traditions. The article consists of two parts: 1) one compilation and critical reflection of the definitions published about the term jazz and 2) a formal analysis of the style. The results are determined by those musical aspects that contribute to originality in improvisatory practice derived from the culture shock of both cultures.
