The expression by means of contemporary languages is less frequent in Spanish music conservatories than in other art education centers of similar academic rank. We detect several reasons for it, standing out among them an intense tonal acculturation, which affects the musical preferences of both teachers and of students. The present study presents several relevant statements made by music students of different instruments that help explain their reasons for finding these musical languages either attractive or undesirable. Those statements can also open up ways of explaining the scarcity of contemporary languages in our educational context. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with sixty students as they learned an atonal piece of music. They were interviewed in two different moments of the process. Among the results obtained, we have found that several individuals have a tendency to show interest and to enjoy with this kind of music. Nevertheless, enjoyment is more intense when playing than when listening to it. In many cases, teachers’ involvement is considered fundamental. Those who manifest a certain rejection for these kinds of languages point out comprehension difficulties and their relatively small presence both in our academic and in our social sound environment. Perhaps, we should learn from other forms of artistic expression and introduce these kinds of languages at mu ch earlier levels in our educational system.
