Abstract

Play is a key part of human development, especially in the infant stage, so it should also occupy a prominent place in formal education. This study is motivated by the need to build a theoretical reference framework for teachers from the standpoint of music. Therefore, the goal of this research was to identify the scientific literature dealing with the field of musical play in early childhood, during the 2006 - 2014 period and using the ERIC database and the Google Scholar platform. The search was based on three main descriptors – music, play, and early childhood – using English keywords. Out of the 42 publications located, only 24 met the search criteria. The results of this review of the literature are divided into four thematic areas: Educational interventions and curriculum, Cultural dimension of play, Technological games and Music as a medium. This paper, while drawing attention to the different topics within this field of study, highlights the scarcity of scientific literature focused on a resource as important as musical play for early childhood development.
