Abstract

The present article analyzes the symbolism of chivalric attire in El cortesano (1561) by Luis Milán. The first part provides a brief historical and cultural overview of the work, and a summary of the importance of attire during the Renaissance period, specifically in the courtly environment of the Viceroyal Court of Valencia under the Duke of Calabria and Germana de Foix, as well. The second part consists of a study of various examples, focusing on the color of the garments and their symbolic interpretation within the work.
