Abstract

The analysis and classification of mentions of the shirt in books of chivalry and their precedents in Castilian medieval chivalric literature reveal a wide variety of contexts and multiple, even opposed, symbolic meanings. Particular attention is given to the association of the shirt with scenes of humiliation and honour, violence, recognition (anagnorisis), representation of wealth or poverty, or social status, declaration of hidden feelings, representation of the female body (especially virginity), romantic surrender and sexual harassment, eroticism, and humor.
