In this article, Iwill present a brief advance of a theory that views science-fiction not only in terms of its generic nature, but that also studies it as a mode and as a formula. Thus, science-fiction will be proposed as a genre when it has complete control of the narration, even if uses other genres; as a mode, when it is present in other genres, and the narration does not completely depend on it; and as a formula, when the science-fictional ideas are subordinated to a plot and become only motifs, thus losing their innovating effect.
