Abstract

From the middle of the twentieth century, it is customary in most Mediterranean Romance-speaking countries, to incorporate proper nouns without any modification or with the minimal modifications that the phonological inventory and the morphological structures might require. On the other side, when translating what is comic, the principle of equivalent reaction cannot be ignored, which tends to result in substitution. As a third option, we have “translation proper”, especially when the proper nouns are “transparent”. The present article analyzes how these options have been applied to the translation of the names of comedians and of characters of fairy tales, comics and cartoons from the seventeenth century to our present day and with Spanish and other main Western European languages as target languages.
