Abstract

Using both Blum-Kulka et al’s  (1989) theoretical model to classify request strategies and Brown and Levinson’s (1987) to classify them either as deference or solidarity politeness, this article examines requests for a service posed by Argentinean subjects in a role-play –P, –D, –R situation. Results indicate that Argentinean participants prefer solidarity politeness strategies both to pose their request and to negotiate the conditions under which it would be satisfied. It was also observed that participants preferred strategies that would threaten their own face, rather than their interlocutor’s while protecting their own and interlocutor’s positive face.
