Resumen

How Democracies Die, Fast and Slow

Abstract: The spirit and substance of democracy can perish in multiple ways, in different tempos. These variable rhythms of democide need to be identified and understood, not just because they underscore the descriptive-analytic point that there is no single way in which democracies are destroyed, or come by accident or design to sabotage themselves. Knowledge of the variable modes and rates of decline of democracy serves as an early warning detector, a way of spotting the first symptoms of democide so that pre-emptive strategies can be found to defend and enliven democracies in trouble.
