Quantification of volumetric changes in beach and dune systems is essential to perform sedimentary balances in coastal sedimentary cells and to fully understand the beach evolution. This work examines the potential of series of aerial photographs, originally used to create orthophotographies, for monitoring beach and foredune volumetric changes over the coastal sector between València and Cullera.
This research demonstrates that these aerial photographs can be managed, with current photogrammetric techniques, in order to obtain Digital Surface Models (DSMs). As a result 6 DSMs were obtained between 2017 and 2022, which demonstrates that these aerial photographs can become a robust source of three-dimensional information comparable to LiDAR methods while improving the temporal resolution of the available three-dimensional data.
The models allow the volumetric characterization of the foredune and the emerged beach, as well as the analysis of the changes undergone by these coastal units over time. The combination of the three-dimensional information and two-dimensional measurements provide a holistic view complementary to other sources of morphological information. Regarding the effect of the storms on the coastal front, the results show the strong impact of the Storm Gloria, which generated significant sedimentary losses from which many coastal segments do not seem to be able to recover.
