Gordon's musical learning psychology, or "music learning theory, is the basis of his method of music. Both theory and method reflect general principles of educational psychology and focus on a concept, audiation, a term Gordon coined in 1976 to designate the ability to imagine musical sounds when they are not present and to assign a meaning to sounds While listening, interpreting, creating, reading and writing.
