Catalan translation in the 1960s: Lawrence Durrell under censorship

Abstract

In 1965, within the framework of the recovery of Catalan translation, two publishers requested permissions to publish a tetralogy written by Lawrence Durrell, The Alexandria Quartet. Both obtained it with deletions, although the first publisher, Plaza & Janés, never carried out the publication, and the second one, Aymà-Proa, did it though not immediately: only the first volume, Justine, was edited in 1969, and the other works, Balthazar, Mountolive, and Clea, were published in 1984, also by Proa, in the collection «A Tot Vent». This article aims to unearth the censorship processes that these four novels had to go through in a period in which publishers took over again the reins of their business.
