Abstract

In 1973, Editorial Joventut published the third edition of Josep Carner’s translation of Alice’s Adventures on Wonderland, first published in 1927 by Edicions Mentora. In the edition of Joventut, Albert Manent introduced about 1,200 changes, without being noticed, to tone down the original baroquism. This paper links Carner’s translations to the Noucentism cultural and linguistic policy, discusses Manent’s view of the literary language and how he addressed this particular proofreading and explains the most relevant lexical changes which are related to tone down flowery and unrelated to the Catalan norm.
