Abstract

This article aims to present some possible traces of the folktale Country Mouse VisitsTown Mouse (ATU, 112) in Areúsa's monologue about the life of the maids, which appears at the end of the second scene of Auto IX in La Celestina. The articles examines the monologue and the echoes of several Latin and vernacular versions enclosed in this well-known folktale. It is suggested that Areúsa could seek an identification between her past life in «palace» (as the city mouse) and her humbler but freer existence in the present.
