The one who plucks the strange fantasies: Bances Candamo and the dramatic function of chordophones

Stringed instruments, when not accompanied by singing, generally go unnoticed in the Spanish Golden Age theatre, but the playwrights assigned certain functions to their sound. This article analyses all the appearances of chordophones in the plays of Francisco Bances Candamo with the aim of exposing the difficulties for current research and the foundations that allow us to extract a semantics of these musical instruments from the dramatic contexts in which are inserted. The result is a good number of poetic-musical resources derived from a sound that is often buried in vague stage directions, but which inspired the entire work of the official playwright of Carlos II and much of the theatre of his time.
