Success, fame and talent: young audiences and music education through the mass media

Abstract

The digital information society poses new and constant educational challenges. This article sets out some observations that emerged from an ongoing investigation which focuses on young people as adolescents, more specifically on how they view reality through screens, and what new teaching-learning opportunities can audiovisual media offer us for the practice of music education in schools. We introduce a description of the theoretical aspects related to the impact of young people’s cultural and audiovisual consumption habits, and how this influences their own identity and construction of the self, as well as their processes of socialization. In addition, the article makes a subsequent comparative analysis of the projected image of music and performers in selected music television programs, paying special attention to the phenomena of Operación Triunfo and La Voz. Finally, we observe a set of stereotypes and common traits associated with the world of music and its participants.

Author Biographies

María García Celdrán, Universidad de Murcia

María García Celdrán is a PhD student in Education within the Research Program for the Improvement of Education in Specific Teachings at the University of Murcia. She holds a degree in Primary and Child Education and a Master’s Degree in Teacher Training. She is also a qualified Professional in music in the piano speciality by the Professional Conservatory of Music of Cartagena. She currently teaches Music Education in highschool. She has participated in various conferences related to her research interests. Her research, publications and pedagogical proposals are related to music, education and the audiovisual.

Enrique Encabo, Universidad de Murcia

Enrique Encabo is Professor of Music at the University of Murcia. His research activity focuses on the study, analysis and interpretation of music, scene, literature and aesthetics from the second half of the nineteenth century until today. He has authored/edited the volumes Música y nacionalismos. El arte en la era de la ideología (2007), Música y cultura audiovisual: Horizontes (2014), Reinventing Sound: Music and audiovisual culture (2015), Música y prensa. Crítica, polémica y propaganda (2015) and Sound in motion: cinema, videogames, technology and audiences (2018). He is the founder and director of the MUCA-International Music and Audiovisual Culture Congress, a popular and prominent academic event held in Spain since 2014.
