Europe is at the most serious moment of the nationalist and populist threat. In 2018, not only the values of 1968 but also the conquests and ideals of 1945-1950 are in question: peace between former enemies through economic and social integration and the joint construction of a European democracy in the states and between states. The elections for the European Parliament will be decisive because the EP has the power of co-decision and can block everything in case of populist majority. The time of rhetorical pleas for the United States of Europe is over. The time has come to try to reconcile a broad progressive front for political union with distinct political identities.
