This article considers the different possibilities represented by the idea of pause in Diego Meret’s first novel, En la pausa (2009). Whether as a historical period, a physiological condition, or as writing itself, pause is here presented as that opens a space for reflection on the recovery of experience and the emergence of disjointed temporalities that break with the expectation of chronological storytelling and historical linearity. I suggest that we understand pause as a narrative device that highlights the social and political lethargy that marked the neoliberal years of the Carlos Menem government in Argentina and the impossibility of recovering experience during that period. At the same time, pause itself becomes narration, completely open to uncertainty.
