This research characterizes the pragmatic functioning of manual illustrative gestures, specifically pictograms, spatial markers and temporal markers, used in conversational narratives of Chilean speakers, and describes their relationship with social factors, gender and educational level of the speakers. For this purpose, a sample of 54 videotaped conversational narratives is analyzed. The results of the study show that pictograms have a much higher frequency of use compared to the other types of illustrators that have been analyzed here, but that, as a whole, this type of gesture is usually related to the reportability of the story and, in most cases, to the evaluation of the stories. In addition, the illustrators studied are co-structured with verbal elements that also contribute to the narrative development. The illustrative gestures identified are mostly recorded in conversational narratives produced among men at the middle and university levels of education.
