Abstract

All poetry translators must very often recall Paul Valery's famous definition of poetry as a hesitation between the sound and the sense. We will see why. For now, let us remember that some French structuralists started to believe in what is known as "phonetic symbolism", which consists in endowing isolated phonemes with semantic values.
