Abstract

This text is a research-creation essay on violence against women artists, based on my experience as a mixed-race researcher-artist who was the victim of moral harassment at work. This autofiction draws on the processes of delegitimisation, violence and invisibilisation that have accompanied my artistic and professional career. This autofictional account is based on a fictional dialogue with Jeannine Guillou, an invisibilised woman painter, wife of Nicolas de Staël, who died in 1947 of exhaustion and was brought back to life by an exhibition in 2011 accompanied by a catalogue. The dialogue is based on a scenography made up of photographs of several of my paintings, emblematic of my career. This scenography will represent a symbolic path, from anonymity to visibility, from impostor syndrome to the spotlight on my career as an artist, in counterpoint with the path of other forgotten or little-known women artists.

Author Biography

Karine Katia Bénac, Cie Kré-Ambule LEGS-UMR 8238

Karine Katia Bénac est chercheuse-artiste féministe, maîtresse de conférences HDR (9e et 18e sections du CNU) en arts du spectacle à l'Université des Antilles (Martinique) et membre du LEGS-UMR 8238. Elle est poète, artiste-peintre autodidacte, autrice dramatique, clown-chercheuse, performeuse, metteuse en scène. Issue de l’immigration algérienne par son père (danseur et chorégraphe), et de la Réunion par son grand-père maternel engagé dans les Tirailleurs Sénégalais, elle a écrit, conçu, mis en scène et parfois interprété plusieurs pièces et performances de recherche-création avec des étudiant·e·s/doctorantes autour des héritages coloniaux et de leurs enjeux identitaires, politiques, culturels, en ligne sur manioc.org . Depuis 2022 elle s’est lancée dans le seule en scène, avec notamment une conférence-performance clownesque de 45’ inspirée de son expérience de plainte pour harcèlement moral au travail (avec condamnation au pénal en 2023), « Le théâtre karibéen : sa troupe, son répertoire, son devenir ». Sa pièce La Biquette d’El Biar , qui traite de la transmission intergénérationnelle des traumas dans le contexte de la guerre d’Algérie, a été finaliste en 2023 du prix « Le Jardin d’Arlequin ». Elle a été lauréate en 2020 de la Fondation pour La Mémoire de l’Esclavage pour sa pièce de recherche-création étudiante, comédie-ballet féministe décoloniale, Des Veuves créoles (2022), en ligne sur manioc.org .  Elle a créé avec Céline Paringaux la compagnie Kré-Ambule en 2023. Elle a ouvert un champ de recherche sur le traitement des stéréotypes raciaux/genrés, les perspectives décoloniales et les rapports sociaux de sexe dans la danse contemporaine en Martinique. Elle est membre du comité de pilotage de la plate-forme www.matrimoine.art .
