Aquesta introducció emmarca els articles del número monogràfic de Just Journal of Language Rights & Minorities, Revista de Drets Lingüístics i Minories dedicat a la interpretació per a poblacions vulnerables. Tenint en compte l’interès creixen pel paper de les i els intèrprets que treballen per a poblacions amb distints graus de vulnerabilitat en contextos diferents, aquesta introducció comença amb un examen de les definicions matisades del concepte de vulnerabilitat, de les seues causes i de la manera com som vulnerables a altres persones. L'editora i l'editor del monogràfic se centren a continuació en la llengua com un element important que pot generar vulnerabilitat i analitzen el paper de les i els intèrprets a l'hora de pal·liar aquesta vulnerabilitat quan faciliten la comunicació. A continuació, descriuen com els articles d'aquest número especial exploren la noció de vulnerabilitat i el paper tan complex que exerceixen les i els intèrprets que treballen per a categories específiques de poblacions vulnerables en diferents contextos institucionals i geogràfics. Els articles descriuen els elements que les i els intèrprets han de tenir en compte a l'hora de gestionar aquestes situacions complexes que es caracteritzen per la importància vital de la situació per a la persona vulnerable i, sovint, per dinàmiques de poder (summament) asimètriques i de dependència.
