Interpreting for vulnerable populations: Tracing the role of interpreters in contexts of vulnerability

Resumen

Esta introducción enmarca los artículos del número monográfico de Just Journal of Language Rights & Minorities, Revista de Drets Lingüístics i Minories dedicado a la interpretación para poblaciones vulnerables. Habida cuenta del creciente interés en el papel de las y los intérpretes que trabajan para poblaciones con distintos grados de vulnerabilidad en contextos diferentes, esta introducción comienza con un examen de las definiciones matizadas del concepto de vulnerabilidad, de sus causas y de la manera en que somos vulnerables a otras personas. La editora y el editor del monográfico se centran a continuación en la lengua como un elemento importante que puede generar vulnerabilidad y analizan el papel de las y los intérpretes a la hora de paliar esta vulnerabilidad cuando facilitan la comunicación. A continuación, describen cómo los artículos de este número especial exploran la noción de vulnerabilidad y el papel tan complejo desempeñado por aquellas y aquellos intérpretes que trabajan para categorías específicas de poblaciones vulnerables en distintos contextos institucionales y geográficos. Los artículos describen los elementos que las y los intérpretes deben tener en cuenta a la hora de gestionar estas situaciones complejas que se caracterizan por lo mucho que está en juego para la persona vulnerable y, a menudo, por dinámicas de poder (sumamente) asimétricas y de dependencia.
