Abstract

In this paper,we analyze the way by which university students in Spain work and study, using data from the Ecovipeusurvey. Four categories are distinguished: those who are solely dedicated to studying, those who work full-time, those who have part-time jobs, or those who perform intermittent work. These different forms of commitment are examined according to various demographic characteristics, including socioeconomic status of the parents and what is called "the experience of work and study," referring to the reviews given by people interviewed about various aspects associated with the experience of making study and work compatible. The findings of this study show, first, the numerical relevance of university students doing some kind of paid work, almost half of the total examined group. Second, the incidence of major sociodemographic variables and the close statistical relationship with their parent’s educational level, employment status, occupation and income.Finally, students’ experiences are interpretedusing factoranalysis, which helped to highlight the motivations, meaning and evaluation attributed to work and study.
