Abstract

This article begins with an overview of the history of translation studies in the United States, highlighting Law-rence Venuti’s critique of past approaches adopted by English-language translators, and his proposal for an inter-pretative notion of translation. Venuti’s concept of «simpatico» provides a springboard for the author to elaborate on her translation of Spanish women writers inspired by her own bicultural identity. The article concludes with reflections on developments, like recent efforts by the MLA (Modern Language Association) to bring attention to translation, as well as the proliferation of bilingualism and biculturalism in this increasingly global world, that augur a more welcoming attitude toward translation in the United States today.
