The biopic between seriality and cinema: the case of Chiamatemi Francesco
Abstract
This article, starting with the case of the Italian-produced biopic Chiamatemi Francesco, dedicated to Pope Bergoglio, addresses some of the issues related to the biographical genre in the audiovisual field. Methodologically, a perspective is adopted that aims to integrate textual semiotic analysis and a genetic analysis of the project that starts from the production processes. In this specific case, the analysis focuses first on the relationship between the film and television versions (of double duration) of the story, highlighting how precisely the duration of the chosen format influences narrative choices in a very strong way, producing significant effects in terms of ideology and values. In more detail, the dynamics related to the narrative and attitudinal levels were highlighted, finding in Chiamatemi Francesco operational patterns typical of the biopic genre. In the background emerges the relevance of the issue related to the relationship between factual-historical truth (which should be considered in non-referential terms, but as a repertoire of textualized documents) and narrative adaptation, a dialectical relationship between respect for sources and the search for audience involvement and approval.
