Abstract

The implementation of a method when teaching a second language is essential. The teacher must know the current methodologies and be able to adapt them to the needs of his students. This work therefore offers a historiographical overview of second language methods beginning with the traditional method until the current ones: the methods focused on the process. The article aims to compile the constituents that make up a method so that the teacher can appreciate the differences and similarities between methods, but also understand how to teach and how the student will learn through a method. The definition of method by Sánchez Pérez (2009) and his systematization into three sections (principles, contents, and practices) has been taken as a model for this article. Following this division, a table has been created to compile the information for each method. As a result, the teacher will be able to appreciate the components that make up the various methods and understand the implications of applying them in the second language classroom.
