Determining sociolinguistic factors in the postposition of the subject personal pronoun in Costeño

Abstract

In this paper we analyze the postposition of the subject personal pronoun in Colombian Caribbean Spanish or Costeño from a sociovariate perspective. We used a sample of 18 informants per sociolinguistic corpus from Colombian Caribbean cities (Barranquilla, Cartagena and Valledupar), collected within the framework of PRESEEA, and coded 150 finite variable verbs per speaker. Cases were coded according to the PRESEEA Guide for the Study of ESP Variation. Statistical analysis was performed with the Rbrul program. Although the Valledupar variety behaves somewhat differently, the results obtained confirm the internal coherence of Costeño and its inclusion in Caribbean Spanish. Certain classical variables determining postposition were significant, but others were not, suggesting the need for further analysis of this aspect in general Spanish.
