Abstract

In this article we illustrate the possibilities of using the corpora of the PRESEEA Network to study the effects of Catalan contact on Spanish. This is achieved by contrasting data from Alcalá de Henares, Valencia and Palma de Mallorca among other communities. The phenomena considered are the variation in the use of the morphological futures cantaré versus the periphrastic one voy a cantar both meaning 'I will sing', and the distribution of the obligation periphrases haber de and tener que. The contrastive analysis reveals some effects of the influence of Catalan in bilingual communities: in the case of the futures, there is greater retention of the morphological future cantaré; as for the obligation periphrases, the influence of Catalan results in a lower degree of differentiation of the functions of deontic and epistemic modality in the distribution of haber de and tener que.
