Abstract

Phraseology is one of the most peculiar and distinctive components of a language and the one which most clearly shows the existing link between a linguistic system and the community that has transformed it into an accurate image of its particular view of the world affairs through the continuing use of its idiosyncratic forms. Phraseological units (UFS) are a common resource both in everyday communication and the literary languages. Our analysis of the Catalan UFS of Carles Batlle’s drama Combat and its counterparts in the German translation will help us determine the degree of equivalence between them and to which extent this factor has an influence on the election of a translation strategy which allows us to preserve every meaningful level of signification of a UF with all its expressive potentials when it is used with a creative purpose.
