Digital interventions with families - a case study

Abstract

This article discusses the responses developed in Portugal during the state of emergency by a family empowerment and intervention team and how this team actively integrated contingency plans and challenges through information and communication technology (ICT). We also explain what was learned during this period and what could have been done better. The family empowerment intervention teams of this organization are specialized multidisciplinary teams that act from a perspective to teach parenting skills to families to ensure that the rights of their children and adolescents are guaranteed. These teams’ interventions normally take place in the home environment. However, the state of emergency meant that this procedure had to be adapted by incorporating digital practices, while home visits and consultations were carried out only in emergencies and other duly justified situations. The result of this experience was extremely positive in terms of the relationships established with the families and couples, the skills developed, and the resilience shown by all.

Helena Belchior Rocha has a PhD in Social Work, is an Assistant professor at ISCTE- University Institute of Lisbon in the Department of Political Science and Public Policies and deputy director of the Transversal Skills Laboratory. Integrated researcher at CIES,  Centre for Research and Studies in Sociology , linked to national and international research projects, namely 2 from Marie Curie Actions. Author of papers and communications at national and international congresses, in the areas of social work theory and methodology, environment, sustainability, community Intervention, ethics, human rights, social policies and Well-being, education and soft skills. Member of the Editorial Board of national/international journals.

Inês Casquilho-Martins, Iscte-University Institute of Lisbon (CIES) CLISSIS-Centro Lusíada de Investigação em Serviço Social e Intervenção Social

PhD in Social Work at ISCTE with the theme: Social protection models in societies with austerity programs. Assistant Professor at Instituto Superior de Serviço Social de Lisboa (Universidade Lusíada) and Invited Assistant Professor at Soft Skills Lab (LCT-iscte). Researcher at Centre for Research and Studies in Sociology (CIES-iscte) in research group Politics and Citizenship and at CLISSIS - Centro Lusíada de Investigação em Serviço Social e Intervenção Social. She was Online Learning's technical and pedagogical coordinator for the promotion, preparation, production and dissemination of iscte e-learning courses (2017-2019).
