In this essay we have tried to outline a first, temporary, survey, with a particular reference to the Operette morali, of the relationship between Leopardi and metaphysics. The following pages, without claiming to be exhaustive, can be read as preparatory and introductory to a resarch still in progress. We have tried, in particular, to grasp the connection that Leopardi finds between metaphysics and loneliness and to recreate the heretical specificity of the standing of the Recanati poet, his critical way of living the role of the intellectual in the era of the crisis, his “solitary” and firm resistance opposed to the nihilistic decline of the civilization in the modern.
