Higher Education Institutions have experienced a gradual transformation in their structures to respond to the changing environment. In this paper, we show, from the sociology of science, different interpretations to the process of institutionalization of science in the academic context. This approach is characterized mainly by the study of the institutionalization process that allows investigate the defining features of science as a social institution. This approach is useful to study higher education systems since the institutionalized rules are shaping the organizational structure and provide information about what regulates the institution formation rather the individual behavior.
