For Epicurus and his school, a priority objective is to achieve a happy life based on the absence of needs in an environment of serenity. A primary foundation for such an achievement is the cultivation of friendship. In today’s individualistic world, this modus vivendi is claimed by relevant poetic voices in Spain. This is the case of Juan Antonio González Iglesias (1964), a calm hedonist whose collection of poems Jardín Gulbenkian (2019) follows the best Epicurean tradition and appropriates austerity and slowness as vital attitudes in addition to the essential need for friendship as the final pillar of happiness.
