Abstract

This paper presents part of the conclusions reached in larger study on the reception of contemporary British theatre in Spain from 1956 to 2004. It is grounded in Polysystem Theory although it has been necessary to develop a specific research methodology since there is a lack of practical models for theatre studies. That methodology involves a thorough documentary basis analysed at the light of the political, social, cultural and theatrical Spanish systems during the dictatorship. Moreover, comparative references to the original process of reception are also provided. The result is a comprehensive overview which tries to avoid canons and preconceptions. The conclusions show that contemporary commercial British theatre has played an important role in configurating commercial Spanish theatre during the dictatorship. Therefore, it has also contributed to characterise the alternative and politically engaged Spanish theatre of the period.
