A stream of literary figures identified recently in Peninsular films as third cinema has enriched critical perspectives in the analysis of transnational works representing the multicultural reality of Spain. Through the story of a young couple who decide to cross all borders between Paris and Algiers, walking therefore against the grain of immigration through the Iberian Peninsula, Tony Gatlif’s Exils is a great example of how this cinema can carry out the ambitions of literature, while discussing issues of exiles. This article analyses how Spain stands as the metaphoric and alegoric borderland they have to traverse in order to reconstruct their fragmented identity.
