Abstract

This article describes the ways in which numerous Western artists constructed their own colonial space around the city of Tangier without consideration for the native culture, with special regard to Paul Bowles and his work The Sheltering Sky (1949).

And it confronts those ways with the strategies used by several contemporary Arab writers and critics, especially Tahar Ben Jelloun, to resist and question this orientalist construction of the city.
