Abstract

Roman Age Rhetoricians contribute decisively to the contemporary aesthetic judgment about Greek Comedy and its poets and, therefore, to the choice of models: Aristophanes and Menander principally, as well as Cratinus and Eupolis in the Ancient Comedy and Philemo in the New Comedy. That’s what can be deduced from Aelius Theon’s Progymnasmata, Hermogenes’ and Aphtonius’ works, philosopher Dion Prusius’ aesthetic reflections or the Rhetorica  wrongly attributed to Dionysius Halicarnassus. Preferences for any poet were not necessary exclusive; it depended not only on Rhetorician’s orientation and the Grammarian or Philologist who mentioned the poet, but also on the issue they were addressing.
